At My Skin Concept we know that summer can be an especially challenging season for pregnant women, with constant questions about how to protect themselves and take care of their health and well-being at this special time. To help future moms and dads, our team has gathered the questions that most ask us at this stage and we answer each one of them.
1. Can pregnant women sunbathe?
Yes, but some additional precautions are necessary. It is common for pregnant women's skin to be more sensitive due to hormonal changes and, therefore, sun exposure must be carried out with extra care, such as always using sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, preferring the shade and avoiding sun exposure during peak hours (10am-4pm). For added protection, don't forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
2. What are the risks of excessive heat during pregnancy?
Possible consequences associated with extreme heat include dehydration, overheating and even an increased risk of complications such as high blood pressure. Staying hydrated, avoiding intense physical activity during the hottest times and looking for cool, ventilated places help to avoid unnecessary problems and stay well.
3. Are all sun protection products safe for pregnant women?
No, products containing oxybenzone, retinyl palmitate or other potentially harmful chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin should be avoided. Favor mineral or physical sunscreens, with ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. If you have questions about your choice, our team is just a message away to help you.
4. How to prevent and treat swelling in the legs and feet during the summer?
Bloating is common during pregnancy, especially in summer due to the heat. To prevent and alleviate it, stay hydrated, elevate your legs whenever possible, wear comfortable shoes and avoid standing for long periods. Light exercise, such as walking or swimming, can also help with circulation.
5. Is it safe to travel during the summer?
Traveling is generally safe during pregnancy, especially in the second trimester. However, you should always consult your doctor before traveling. If you are traveling by plane, move regularly to avoid thrombosis. By car, make frequent stops to stretch your legs and stay hydrated. Avoid destinations with extreme heat or disease outbreaks.
6. How to deal with sensitive skin during pregnancy in summer?
As we mentioned previously, it is normal for the skin to become more sensitive during pregnancy. To avoid consequences, favor the use of hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products, hydrate yourself well and avoid the use of products that have salicylic acid, retinoids or other aggressive ingredients in their composition. A good moisturizer and sunscreen are essential.
8. What are the warning signs of heat-related problems during pregnancy?
Extreme thirst, dry mouth or dark urine can be signs of dehydration, while muscle cramps, dizziness and nausea can be warnings of overheating. Other serious symptoms such as intense headaches, blurred vision or sudden swelling in the hands and face should also be seen as a warning to seek medical help immediately.
